Health care reform is a hot topic among state politicians

Legislators react to national debate with bills of their own, attempts to stop proposals

by Kali Schumitz | Staff Writer

The national focus on health care seems to have trickled down to the state level, as state legislators try to enact Virginia versions of proposed national health care reforms, while others aim to stop provisions of the proposed federal legislation they oppose.

“In the context of the health care debate at the federal level, this is kind of natural,” said Del. Mark Keam (D-Dist. 35) of Vienna, who says he heard much about the costs of health care while campaigning last year.

Keam introduced a bill that would require the secretary of administration to design an insurance purchasing pool program for businesses with 50 or fewer employees. State officials would have nearly two years to develop the program and would be required to work with the insurance industry and business owners in developing the program.
